Historic Bishop Auckland pub with links to Grand National winner put on the market

A historic Bishop Auckland public house with links to a famous Grand National winner has been put on the market for £250,000.

The Red Alligator, on Auckland Road in South Church, is being offered for sale as a freehold property for £250,000 plus VAT, or a new free-of-tie leasehold option for £10,000.

The detached two-storey property has a long history. During the Victorian era it operated as the Crown and Anchor before being renamed in honour of Red Alligator, the chestnut racehorse which won the 1968 Grand National. The horse was trained by Denys Smith at stables situated across the road from the pub.

The property is situated in Bishop Auckland, an historic County Durham market town known for its links to the Prince-Bishops. Attractions in the area include Auckland Palace and Gardens, the Faith Museum, Spanish Gallery and Kynren, while the town has also benefited from regeneration through The Auckland Project.

The pub is currently closed, but previously traded as a food-led establishment serving the local community and surrounding area. Its specialities included freshly prepared home-made food, local parmos and a Sunday carvery.

The property includes a substantial trading area, with a main bar featuring exposed beams, stone walls and a brick fireplace with log burner. There is additional seating for 25 customers, a two-section commercial kitchen, preparation room and customer toilet facilities.

Upstairs, the owners' accommodation has recently been refurbished and includes a kitchen, lounge, three double bedrooms and a shower room. The property also has a separate studio flat with a bedroom and shower room. Outside, there is a beer patio with seating for up to 60 people and a car park with space for 28 vehicles.

The first-floor accommodation could potentially be offered to the short-term holiday market, subject to the necessary planning permissions.
